Welsh Football League Division One
Weather - Dry, warm and muggy On another warm spring day, Pontardawe played their fourth game this week, against another of the top sides Aberaman Athletic at the Rec. Ponty started very strongly again and forced a corner after about 4mines. Steve Cox rose and scored to settle what little Ponty nerves there were. This was an excellent start and Ponty continued to dominate the majority of the half with Jon Coates, Steve Cox, Dan McGrath, Gary Taylor and Chris Allen all putting in good performances. Ponty were heading for a 1-0 lead with the half time whistle only minutes away when Gareth Govier tried to head a harmless ball back to Ben in goal, only to see it creep into the net despite Bens best efforts. Ponty were spared however, as the Aberaman forward was given offside moments before. Lessons learnt Ponty went into the half time break deservedly 1-0 up. Ponty again started the stronger of the two teams and deservedly went 2-0 up from Carl Owens who latched onto a through ball to fire home at the near post. Ponty were cruising now but were forced into a couple of substitutions with Jon Coates and Dale Otten leaving the field. Jon was replaced by Steffan Davies who made an almost immediate impact with a goal following a rebound from Chris Allens challenge with the Aberaman keeper. Ponty were now 3-0 up and in control. Steffan rounded the scoring off with a well taken close range shot to send the Ponty crowd wild and could have had his hat-trick minutes later had he been a little more composed. Ponty should have had a fifth from the penalty spot when Andrew Stokes was brought down by the Aberaman keeper but the keeper made up for his mistake when he saved Stokesy's spot kick. Moments later the final whistle went on yet another very impressive Ponty performance and another very important 3 points. Ponty now face yet another of the table toppers when Afan Lido visit the Rec on Monday 19th April. This will be Ponty's fifth game in 9 days in a manic end of the season fixture list.
