Welsh Football League Division One
Weather - Dry, warm and muggy Pontardawe welcomed Afan Lido to the Recreation ground on Monday 19th April in what was their fifth game in 9 days. Afan Lido were second in Division One going into this game, trailing Goytre United by three points. Ponty had already played Goytre earlier in this marathon run of games, securing 1 point but ruing the chances that got away to take all 3 against a strong Goytre side. It was with great anticipation and expectation, given previous results against the table toppers, that Ponty started this game. However, due to injuries and unavailability, changes were inevitable. Lido started strongly and put Ponty under tremendous pressure for the first 30 minutes. Ponty defended and rode their luck on several occasions but did threaten the Lido goal themselves on a couple of occasions. However, during a 11 minute period, Ponty conceded 3 goals and looked on the racks and were glad to see the half time whistle. Ponty started the second half with more determination and threatened the Lido goal but could not get that early goal to put Lido under some pressure. Whilst it was a much improved second half from Ponty, Lido still carved out a couple of chances to extend their lead in a game that for some reason had a bit of niggle about it that the referee struggled to control at times. Ponty were now playing some good football and had some belief in themselves again. James Pickup was introduced for Stefan Davies during the second half and it was James who glanced a Gary Taylor free-kick into the net to give Ponty some hope with about 15 minutes to go. Ponty pressed and Lido were fortunate to clear off their line - if this had gone in it would have produced a great climax to the game but it was not to be. With seconds to go, substitute Arwel Rees was sent off for foul and abusive language which put a dampener on an otherwise hard game between the two local rivals. Afan Lido's win at the Recreation ground now see them sitting at the top of Division One on goal difference and Pontardawe Town would like to wish Lido the very best for the rest of the season, especially with their application for Premiership status.
