Welsh Football League Division One
Weather - Dry / Cold Ponty made the long trip to Caerleon on Wednesday 5th May 2010 looking for yet another 3 points on their travels to south-east Wales and to build on the performance against Caldicot last Saturday to bring all 3 points back to Ponty. Caerleon were fighting for survival in Division One - defeat tonight would almost certainly see them relegated so Ponty knew it was going to be a tough game on a very bumpy and uneven surface. Ponty again started well with Chris Allen and James Pickup working hard up front. It was Chris Allen who neatly slipped a pass inside to the advancing Andrew Stokes who's shot nestled in the back of the net a couple of seconds later to calm Ponty nerves. Caerleon continued to battle and give everything. They got their reward when just seconds from the half-time whistle Deano to not hold onto a loose ball in the box and Luke Cueto bundled the ball in to send the teams in level 1-1 at half time. Ponty continued to create chances in the second half and from a neat flowing move which saw Chris Allen cross from the right for Carl Owen to fire an unstoppable shot from close range into the net to make 2-1 to Ponty. Ponty again pressed and from a quick Deano throw out, Gary Taylor and Dale Otten combined down the Ponty left which saw Dale pass the ball infield to Gareth Govier who from fully 40 yards... ok fully 25 yards, curled and dipped the ball into the top right hand corner for a fantastic first goal for him for the 1st team. Ponty had other chances to seal the game but Caerleon kept pressing and made a couple of claims for penalties and had a goal ruled out for offside but with the light fading fast, Ponty held out for yet another valuable 3 points.
