Although unbeaten in the league since October the league position meant that Pontardawe Town had to start converting draws into wins with immediate effect and to their credit this is what happened with a good win against a battling Ely Rangers.

Injury and absence resulted in a changed line up with Gareth Govier and Stuart Hoskins coming into defence and Ryan Penny moving into the centre of midfield.

Once again Town started well and within 14 minutes were two goals to the good. A welcome goal from Ryan Penny, who has battled back well after a long term injury, was followed on 14 minutes by another for top scorer Steffan Davies (Note that Steff is also claiming the first goal and is escalating his claim to FIFA !!)

With spirits high, but nerves jangling due to previous results, Town continued to press for more but, in fairness, Rangers were causing the Ponty back four some problem and on 19 minutes a great effort by Robert Gretrex from about 25 yards went over keeper Ben Hopkins to bring the score back to 2-1. Both sides had good efforts in the remainder of the first half but it ended 2-1.

In recent weeks Town had fallen victim to an early second half goal but despite a few scares this didn't happen and after 8 minutes of the second half a close in header from Ryan Penny put Town 3-1 up. Rangers didn't give up and had chances but there was now an air of belief amongst the Town players and the result should have been sown up with chance after chance being wasted.

In the 83rd minute a solid tackle by Garry Taylor was deemed dangerous by referee Lee James and, after a fracas between players from both sides, Garry was sent off with a straight red. This was deemed by all to be very harsh indeed.

Town saw out the game quite comfortably and the 3 points were a welcome boost and all are now looking forward to the Friday evening game at Aberaman on March 12th.
