Goal of the Season contenders available here

Ponty's last game of the season against West End,  saw several players play their last game for the Ponty U19 Youth. Ponty dominated the game from start to finish, but still managed to present West End with a couple of good chances to get on the score sheet. Gareth Govier who was playing his last youth game for Ponty was injured after only 20 minutes and was replaced by Paul Jones. Ponty led 3-0 at half time thanks to goals from Nick O'Conner and Springer's. The second half continued in much the same way with further goals from Nicky, Springer's and Liam James. The second half performance was marred by the sending off of Arwel Rees when Ponty were 5-0 up but Ponty were so comfortable that they went on to score a further two goals with only 10 men. West End were a well beaten side when they put through their own goal for Ponty's seventh. This has been a good season overall for Ponty which could have been better if it were not for the two back to back defeats to Carmarthen which if avoided, could have seen Ponty finish second to Llanelli. Congratulations must go to Llanelli who walked away with the league but to Ponty's credit ,they had to work hard in the two games against Ponty to get the points off us. The return fixture on the 26th April 2009 in less than a week saw Ponty travel to
Port Talbot and come away with all 3 points. The first half was a fairly even affair with neither side gaining the upper hand. Chances came and went. The football on show was not helped by the conditions with heavy shows eventually helping to soften a very hard playing surface riddled with bumps. Ponty took the lead when Aled Whitelock's floated free kick was fumbled into his own net by the Port Talbot keeper who was under no pressure whatsoever. Ponty created a couple of other chances as did Port Talbot but Ponty went into the half time break 1-0 up. Port Talbot started the better of the teams in the second half and created a couple of good chances. Ponty weathered the storm and went further ahead when Christian Evans put a looping header over the Port Talbot keeper from a great cross by Liam James to make it 2-0. Ponty had two great chances from Liam and Christian to extend the lead further but both efforts came to nothing. Ponty then lost Christian Evans with a serious knee injury and Christian was taken to hospital by ambulance. Christian also left last seasons match at Port Talbot by ambulance so lets hope he breaks this habit soon !. Ponty had the better of the remaining chances and finally wrapped the game up two minutes from time with a close range shot from Liam James to make the final score 3-0 to Ponty and a well deserved 3 points. Ponty hosted
Port Talbot on the 19th April 2009 in the first of two games between the sides during a week. In what turned out to be a game with not that may chances for either side the points were eventually shared. Ponty went behind from a soft headed goal from a corner which seemed to pass two or three Ponty players before ending up in the net. Ponty equalised within 4 minutes. Christian Evans buried a shot after avoiding a dangerous tackle within the box. Half time came with the scores level 1-1. Ponty had some chances during the opening period of the second half and eventually took the lead from a penalty kick by Christian Evans after Arwel was brought down in the box. Ponty looked good for the 3 points but about 5 minutes from time a very speculative shot sneaked in at the near post to get Port Talbot level. Ponty had some half chances in the closing minutes but the game ended level at 2-2. Watch video highlights of the goals and other match action here. A DVD of the whole game is available upon request.

Ponty took a very young squad down to
Carmarthen for the MacWhirter Youth Division West game on the 30th March 2009 and started the brighter of the teams playing neat one touch football on the ground. Carmarthen however, scored with virtually their first attack and shot on goal after about 20 minutes. Ponty continued to play good football and were awarded a penalty when the Carmarthen right-back needlessly handled the ball. Christian Evans stepped up and put the penalty away to make the scores level. Neither side created a great many chances, with play dominated by the midfield battle in which Springer's led the way. Scott Deakin had a chance to get a strike on goal after being put through from a great ball by Liam but Ponty conceded the second moments before half time to go in 1-2 down. Ponty probably edged the first half but what counts is the score !. Carmarthen started the second half the better of the teams, playing the neat one touch football that Ponty had during the first half. Play revolved around the midfield area with neither team creating many chances. Of those that were created, Ponty created the better chances but failed to take any of the half chances that came their way. Springer's, Nicky O'Conner and Scott Deakin battled all game but the points went to Carmarthen when they got their third about 5 minutes from time when the striker clipped the ball over the advancing Jamie Rano. All in all, a good display by the Ponty lads who pushed Carmarthen hard all the way. Watch video highlights of the goals and other match action here. A DVD of the whole game is available upon request.

Ponty continued a good week with another convincing display in the MacWhirter Youth Division game against Britton Ferry played on Sunday 22nd March 2009 at the Recreation ground. However, Ponty started slowly but went ahead after 15 minutes through Christian Evans. Ponty continued to press and had numerous chances. The Ferry keeper was once again in outstanding form as he made several great saves to keep Ferry in the game. Ferry had a couple of chances due to mix ups in the Ponty back line but failed to take their chances with Jamie Rano again in great form in the Ponty goal. Ponty though, got their second just before half time through Liam James to go into the half-time break 2-0 up.

The second half started well for Ponty with Matthew Tregembo getting his second and Ponty's third after 50 minutes. Ponty never really looked back from this point and dominated the game. Further goals came from Liam James, Nicky O'Conner and Aled Whitelock who was set up for a simple tap in by his brother Rhys to get Ponty's sixth a couple of minutes before full time. This has been a good week for Ponty claiming 7 out of a possible 9 points on offer from the 3 games played this week. The improvement continues with Ponty now eyeing up a runners up spot ? Ponty were under the cosh for long periods of the game in the MacWhirter Youth Division game v Afan Lido on the 18th March 2009 but managed to ride their luck. Jamie Rano made a series of outstanding saves in the first 20-25 minutes to keep Ponty in the game. Without Jamie and the Ponty woodwork, Ponty could have been down 5-2 at half time. Ponty took some time to get going but as they gradually played themselves into the game, the chances came. Ponty's first goal came from a Christian Evans penalty on 30 minutes after Paul was fouled in the box. Just two minutes later and Ponty were 2 up thanks to Matthew Tregembo. Ponty were also creating some chances now and managed to keep Lido out to reach half-time 2-0 up.

The second half saw great play from both sides with Lido pressing hard and Ponty hitting them on the break. Lido eventually got a goal back and were pressing hard for their second when Ponty broke and Paul had a great chance to put the game beyond Lido but his angled shot went wide. Lido continued to press and hit the bar and woodwork again before they finally got the equalizer just 3 minutes from time. Its a credit to both teams that the game ended honours even and Ponty continue their good form - only having lost against Llanelli this season. Watch video highlights of the goals and other match action here. A DVD of the whole game is available upon request.

On a perfect day for football, the first half of the MacWhirter Youth Division West game v Haverfordwest County saw only a handful of chances created between both sides. Play revolved around the expected midfield battle. Ponty created the better of the chances and came close from Paul early on. Haverfordwest had the chance to take the lead but Jamie Rano pulled off a great save to push the ball around the post for a corner. Ponty then had another half chance or two, falling to Liam and Trigger who tried an outrageous lob from 25 yards out but the keeper watched it go wide. The sides went into half time level at 0-0 with Ponty just shading the football and chances in the first half.

Haverfordwest started the better of the two teams in the early stages of the second half but could not take the half chances they created. Ponty then settled and Liam had a great chance to put Ponty ahead but his lob over the keeper went just wide of the post. Ponty eventually took the lead when Matthew Tregembo (Trigger) ran from his own half and calmly slotted the ball past the advancing keeper. The goal was nearly disallowed ( have a look at where the linesman was standing when he raised his flag) but the referee overruled his linesman and awarded the goal. Ponty were then the wrong side of some strange decisions but they did not let these become a distraction. Ponty survived two scares in the last two minutes with Aled Whitelock getting a vital deflection out for a corner and then Ponty survived a penalty shout for what looked like hand ball but they saw the game out to come away with a 1-0 win and all 3 points.

In a game where nothing was on the result except the dubious honour of coming bottom of Group D, Ponty missed a string of chances to finish above West End in the final game in Group D of the MacWhirter Cup, played on Sunday 1st March 2009 Ponty should have taken the lead from the chances created but this was just not going to be Ponty's day. West End took the lead after the half-time break and try as they may, Ponty could not get back on level terms. The league is what Ponty will be concentrating on now.  Watch video highlights of the goals and other match action here

Ponty seem to be getting into a habit of pushing Llanelli all the way as the last couple of games have been tight with only the odd goal between the teams in their MacWhirter Youth Division West encounters. This game was no exception with a cagy first 25 minutes from both sites. Both sides had several half chances, mainly from headers and free kicks without really troubling either keeper. Ponty went ahead from a superbly struck half volley from all of 25 yards from Liam James which flew over the Llanelli keeper into the back of the net to put Ponty ahead. Llanelli pressed for the equalizer and had a chance from an attempted lob, but Jamie Ramo managed to get a hand to it. The first half saw a lot of midfield play with Llanelli edging the number of chances created. The half time break came with Ponty leading 1-0. The second half continued in much the same way as the first with a lot of midfield play. However, Llanelli got their equalizer from a corner that was not dealt with and it fell to Kieran Hayes their centre half to volley home from no more that 5 yards out. Shortly after, Llanelli threw Kieran Hayes up front in an attempt to get another and from a long ball over the top of the Ponty defence he got his and Llanelli's second with a scuffed shot that crept in at the far post. Ponty battled well but could not get the second that their recent form deserved. Perhaps Ponty should stop taking the lead against Llanelli and the end result may be different.... who knows, but out of all Llanelli's 5 league games this year they have only conceded 3 goals.... all scored by Ponty !! It speaks volumes of the lads with their continued improving performances this year, that they are showing that they can consistently compete with the best in this league. Pontardawe faced a physical and strong Taffs Well side in Round 3 of the Welsh FA Youth Cup. On a bitterly cold windy day that saw monkeys looking around for welders to weld their nuts back on, Taffs Well had a couple of chances in the early exchanges and limited Pontardawe to some long range efforts. The first half was scrappy but full of commitment from both sides in difficult conditions. Both sides had chances to take the lead but Taffs Well eventually got in front when Ponty conceded a needless free kick out wide. From the resulting cross the Taffs Well forward produced a glancing header that ended up in the back of the net.  Straight from the kick off the referee blew up for half time. probably Taffs Wells just about edged the half to go in 0-1 up. Early second half saw much of the same from both side but slowly, Ponty started to look more of their usual selves and started to get back into the game. Ponty had a couple of chances before Liam managed to get Ponty level just a couple of minutes before the final whistle with a close range shot from Arwel's pass. Arwel Rees had a chance himself a minute or so later to seal a win for Ponty at the death but could not get the touch needed. Ponty had done well to get themselves back in this game and force extra time. Ponty started the stronger in the first half of extra time and had a couple of half chances to sneak a goal but towards the extra time half time break, Taffs Well were then awarded a dubious free kick out wide which was swung in and eventually fell to a Taffs Well player who looked remarkably off-side to toe-poke the ball home to put Wells 1-2 up. Ponty pressed Taffs Well all the way in the second period of extra time but could not force the game to penalties. Taffs Well ran out eventual 1-2 winners and everyone at Pontardawe wishes them well in the next round against Swansea City. Watch video highlights of the goals and other match action here. A DVD of the whole game is available on request. Please note that during some parts of the game the video footage is very jerky due to the cameraman being so bloody cold and shivering (old wouse as he is !) Also, due to "technical difficulties" (I forgot to wind the tape back !!) the first 4 minutes of the game were missed !

There was some doubt if the game against Britton Ferry in the MacWhirter Youth Division West could go ahead because of the weather but the pitch was playable albeit very uneven and bumpy. Britton Ferry fielded a very young side and it did not take Ponty long to get the upper hand and dominate the game. Ben Taylor opened the scoring by finishing off Arwels cross after 15 minutes and then Ben "leapt like a salmon" at the far post ten minutes later to nod Arwels corner home to make it 0-2 to Ponty. Ben picked up a knock shortly after his second goal and was replaced by Rhys Whitelock just before half time. Ponty created numerous chances during the first half but were content to go into the half time break 2 up. The second half did not produce as many chance as the first half but there were still 3 goals scored during the second period. Ferry managed to pull a goal back from a corner kick in the 56th minute which, on balance was against the general run of play. Paul Lewis settled the Ponty nerves with his first goal of the season as he latched onto Arwels through ball and calmly slotted it home to make it 1-3. Ponty took control back and played some good football.  Liam James and Gareth Govier came as replacements for Christian Evans and Luke Thompson for the last 15 minutes. Liam James got Ponty's fourth 2 minutes before the full time whistle to make it 1-4 to Ponty. This capped off a great weekend for Liam as he netted twice for the Reserves away at Ammanford in the Reserve Cup as well on Saturday. The score would have been more for Ponty but for an outstanding display by the young Ferry keeper. A DVD of the whole game is available upon request. Afan Lido were the visitors to The Rec in the latest MacWhirter Youth Division West game on Sunday 11th January. In a game that saw two penalties awarded to Pontardawe and good flowing football from both sides it was  testament to how Ponty have progressed in the last couple of weeks to draw with Lido 1-1. Ponty held their own against a strong Lido side who will finish in the top of Division West come the seasons end - on this and other recent  performances, Ponty will be there with them. Both side did well to overcome the difficult conditions with numerous chances created on both sides during the first half. Ponty should have taken the lead when they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Craig Spring but Tristan hit the post from the spot kick. From the resulting goal kick, Lido were straight down the other end and managed to sneak the first goal from a deflected shot. Ponty went into the break 0-1 down but started the second half still pressing for the equalising goal. Jamie Rano made an outstanding point blank save to keep Ponty in the game as Lido continued to press and put a couple of shots over the Ponty bar. Matthew Tregembo hit the Lido woodwork with a header before Ponty were awarded their second penalty of the game after a Lido defender jumped into a tackle with both feet. Craig Davies slotted the ball calmly home to get Ponty level. Ponty then had a chance to win the game when Paul Jones had a chance before Jamie Rano pulled off another great save and Ponty managed to scramble the ball clear before Paul had another half chance to get Ponty's second. The game ended in a 1-1 draw and Ponty can be satisfied that they pushed Lido all the way. Pontys level of performance is improving game on game - if the level of improvement continues we will be up there with the top 3 sides at the end of the season.  A DVD of the whole game is available upon request. Pontardawe got off to the best possible start against Llansawel in their MacWhirter Youth Division West game  with Rhys Whitelock scoring on 2 minutes. Numerous other chances came and went before Liam James made it 2 nil on 26 minutes. Scott Deakin got Ponnty's third on 31 minutes with Matthew "Trigger" Tregembo getting his first goal just before the half-time break. Ponty dominated long periods of the first half and were unlucky not to go into the break further ahead than they were at 4-0. Pontardawe started the second half where they left off and dominated. The fifth goal came from Liam James with his second of the game on 59 minutes. Trigger got his second of the game on 77 minutes with Luke Thompson getting his first goal this year and Ponty's seventh on 85 minutes. Trigger rounded off his game with his hat-trick on 88 minutes. Bunjie wrapped the scoring and the game up on 89 minutes with Ponty's ninth from the penalty spot. Chances came and went but it is fair to say that without the five or six saves by the Llansawel keeper who had an outstanding game, the score could have been 14 or 15 at the end. All in all a good performance that has done wonders for the goal difference. A DVD of the game is available upon request. Watch video highlights of the goals and other match action here

Ponty travelled to Llanelli and almost caused an upset in this latest MacWhirter Youth Division West game. The Ponty youth pressed hard from the first whistle and it proved to be the correct tactic as Ponty created much the better chances in the opening exchanges, limiting Llanelli to a long range shot. Ponty went deservedly ahead when Matthew "Trigger" Tregembo latched onto a flick on by Springers, rounded the keeper and slotted home to put Ponty one up. Ponty did not ease off and pressed Llanelli all the way. this pressure again paid off when Matthew Tregembo battled hard to get himself into the box only to be brought down. The resultant spot kick was put away from the keepers initial save by a very relaxed looking Liam James. Ponty continued to battle hard and played neat one touch football to go into the half-time break a very deserved 2 nil up. In hindsight, probably the worse thing to happen to Ponty was to go in for a half-time break. When the second half resumed they let Llanelli play their way and sat back for long periods. The inevitable happened when Llanelli got one back from Dale Otten. The second Llanelli goal came just 8 minutes later and with Dale Otten deflecting a shot into the Ponty goal for Llanelli's third this completed a devastating 15 minute period for Ponty. Pontardawe continued to battle but could not get the equalizer that they deserved. Bunjie cleared off the line in the dying minutes to prevent Llanelli getting their fourth which would not have reflected Ponty's part in this game. This was probably one of the toughest games Llanelli have had this year - it just goes to show that Ponty can compete with the best in the league. A DVD of the game is available upon request. This was the second time that Ponty played Haverfordwest, having lost last week down in Haverfordwest in the MacWhirter Youth Cup, Ponty were determined to get the 3 points on offer in the first MacWhirter Youth Division West game of the season. Ponty started well and dominated most of the first half, creating numerous chances without actually scoring and were unlucky to go into the half-time break on level terms. Whatever the management team of Peter and Dan said to the lads during the half-time "talk" should be written down and sold - someone would make a fortune !. The way Ponty started the second half showed that when they put their mind to it (and have Peters words ringing in their ears) what good football can be played. Ponty scored within 2 minutes of the restart from Liam James. This was followed up by the second from Bunjie just 5 minutes later with Pontys third goal from Liam James just a further 3 minutes later. Ponty had all but sealed the game in a fabulous 8 minute period. However, Pontys Achilles heal in letting teams back in with a sniff struck again on 59 minutes and only 4 minutes after Ponty took a commanding lead with one against the run of play for Haverfordwest. Ponty however continued to be the better of the teams and Arwel settled the nerves with Pontys fourth on 67 minutes. The game was drawing to a close when again Ponty let Haverfordwest sneak another goal. With just 3 minutes remaining Haverfordwest got a "consolation" goal to make the final score 4-2 to Ponty. All in all a good start to the league season. A DVD of the game is available upon request. Watch video highlights of the goals and other match action here

Ponty travelled to Haverfordwest County in the latest MacWhirter Youth Cup Group match and what a game this turned out to be - played in terrible conditions. Pontardawe again got off to a bad start going behind after only 7 minutes. However, Ponty equalized just a minute later through Liam James. Ponty then went 1-2 ahead again from Liam James. Pontardawe got their third straight from the Haverfordwest kick-off after Liam set up Arwel for the easiest of tap-ins. Pontardawe were now playing the better football in the conditions but left Haverfordwest back into the game on 19 minutes. Liam James then completed his hat-trick on 22 minutes to put Ponty ahead 2-4. Haverfordwest got their third just moments before the half-time break to make the score at half-time 3-4. During the half time break a thunder and lightning storm chucked down bucketful's of rain and hail to make the playing surface extremely wet in places ! Ponty extended their lead on the 64th minute when Arwel scored from a tight angle. Pontardawe now looked dominant and were playing good football in the terrible conditions. Ponty then let Haverfordwest back into the game again on 71 minutes. With the score at 4-5, Pontardawe were still looking good for the win. However, Ponty shot themselves in the foot during the last 10 minutes by conceding a further 3 goals on 82, 84 and 89 minutes. Haverfordwest ran out winners 7-5 but Ponty must be asking themselves how the hell they let it slip after being the better of the teams the majority of the game. A DVD of the game is available upon request. Watch video highlights of the goals and other match action here

Ponty Youth travelled to Garden Village in round 2 of the FAW Youth Cup on Sunday 2nd November 2008. Ponty started well but had to ride out some early scares before they took almost total grip of the first half. Ponty again showed what great football they can play when Rhys Whitelock made a surging run down the left for a brilliant solo goal - the only disappointment was that the cameraman was so transfixed watching Rhys that all that was filmed of this great goal was the turf (sorry again Rhys !). Ponty didn't sit back on this lead but again played some great one touch football and the second goal duly arrived from Liam who met a cross to head past the keeper to make it 2-0 to Ponty at the break. Ponty started the stronger of the two teams again in the second half with Rhys Whitelock again supplying a quality cross from the left that found Arwel in acres of space to slot it home to make it 3-0 to Ponty. Ponty were now cruising and it just goes to show that when you are this much on top that you should never ease off the pressure. Ponty were made to pay for some slack football during the last 10 minutes and nearly allowed Village to sneak extra time. Village scored their first with 10 minutes to go and then got their second with 2 minutes to go. In a nervy last couple of minutes Ponty could have sealed the win but Tom Maymons shot hit the Village bar in the last minute. It would have been harsh on Ponty had the game gone into extra time as they should have shut-up shop and kept Village out when they were 3-0 in front. Hopefully this is a lesson to the lads to be ruthless and kill teams off when they are so dominant. All in all, some lessons learned and Ponty progress into round 3. A DVD of the game will be made available upon request. Watch video highlights of the goals and other match action here

Ponty travelled to Carmarthen Town for the latest Group D game of the MacWhirter Youth Cup in what proved to be a very niggly and ill tempered game. Ponty got off to the worse start, conceding after just 12 minutes. Ponty had to re-organise themselves after Luke Thompson was injured in what appeared to be stamp by the Carmarthen Town player after just 15 minutes. Ponty continued to show great promise and created numerous chances but went into the half time break trailing by the single goal. Ponty started the 2nd half the better of the two teams and drew level from a spot kick by Trystan after Liam had been pulled down in the box. Carmarthen were rattled and it showed - Trystan and the Carmarthen Town number 11 clashed just a minute after the equalizer and during the mellay that followed Aled Whitelock along with two Carmarthen players were shown red cards. Ponty now pressed home their advantage with debutant Tom netting to put Ponty 2-1 ahead. Liam James wrapped up the game for Ponty with the third goal on 85 minutes. This level of performance and determination was on the cards from the early minutes as all of the Ponty lads seemed up for the game after all of the results and near misses the previous group games had produced. The ill discipline of the Carmarthen players was again evident when a further incident occurred in the players tunnel after the final whistle. All in all Ponty deserved the win. A DVD of the whole game is also available - please let Phil know if you would like a copy/loan. See video highlights of the goals and other match action here.

Afan Lido were the visitors to The Rec in the latest Group D game of the MacWhirter Youth Cup on Sunday 19th October. In a game where it was vital for Ponty to win to stand a chance of qualifying from the group, the Ponty Youth continued to play well.  Numerous Ponty moves saw good flowing football but the final finish was not there. Lido took the lead on 57 minutes with their second coming from a move that looked distinctly offside on 81 minutes. Pontardawe had two penalty appeals turned down but had other chances to score. All in all, Lido knew that they had been in a game as for long periods Pontardawe dominated but just could not get the breakthrough that their play deserved. Another strong performance goes unrewarded but if Ponty continue with the improvement that they are showing, one day soon, someone will be on the end of a stuffing ! See video highlights of the goals and other match action here

Pontardawe U19's played the second of their Group D games in this seasons MacWhirter Youth Cup at The ReMax Stadium against Port Talbot U19's on Sunday 12th October 2008. In a game that saw both sides produce a nervous start with not much goalmouth action early on, Pontardawe had two chances just before half time to go into the break 2-0 up. However, Springers header hit the bar and bounced back into play and then with the last kick of the first half Tristan put a good chance wide of the goal. Ponty started the second half well with a  Luke Thompson free kick forcing a great save from the Port Talbot keeper. Port Talbot then got the break through on 62 minutes with the opening goal. Their second followed 10 minutes later after a mix up at the Ponty back. Ponty kept on pressing and had chances to get something out of the game with efforts from Glen and Arwel. Overall a disappointing result given the number and quality of the chances created but Ponty can take heart with another strong display. See video highlights of the goals and other match action here

Pontardawe youth played
Caerau Ely (Cardiff) in the FAW Youth Cup on Sunday 28th September 2008 in Cardiff and came away with a 7-1 win. Pontardawe started the game slowly and played with a nervous edge until Jamie Dickinson settled the nerves with a well taken opener. Caerau Ely came back into the game dominated by midfield play on 30 minutes and made it 1-1. This seemed to spur on the Ponty youth who gradually took control of the game with two further goals before half time from Tristan and Arwel. To go into the half time break 3-1 was a relief given the nervy start to the game. Christian Evans then produced something a "little bit special" with a mazy dribble and run into the box to fire home Ponty's fourth just 4 minutes into the second half. Following this, Ponty took complete control and went on to dominate the rest of the game with two goals from Liam with Arwel wrapping up the game with his second and Ponty's seventh on 87 minutes. The second half was a much improved performance with Ponty finally believing in themselves and were well deserving of the final score line. See video highlights of the goals and other match action here.

On Sunday 21st September 2008 Pontardawe played their first
Group D game of the MacWhirter Youth Cup at home to Llanelli. In a game that saw a lot of midfield work by both sides it was Pontardawe who gifted Llanelli two goals and missed a penalty to loose the game eventually 0-3. This was a good battling performance by the Ponty youth who never gave up and Llanelli knew they had been pushed hard. A lot of encouragement can be taken from the performance. Watch video highlights of the goals and other match action here.
